Bethany Harper Williams

Bio

Bethany was born and raised in Montreal. After graduating from Concordia University with a B.F.A., Honours in Graphic Design, she moved to Toronto where she worked as a graphic designer for over 20 years before committing all her efforts to oil painting. She continues to develop her skills and explore beyond her comfort zone, painting with ProjectArt and attending workshops.

Avid for sports and the outdoors, Bethany is inspired by her surroundings. Her work explores the abstract in nature and its connectivity to the collective emotion, questioning what we see, what we remember and the emotions these memories evoke.

By taking the landscape and simplifying it, her aim is to capture a moment without the details of representation. The expanse of nature, be it the sky, beach, or water, provides an opportunity to abstract the elements through expressive brushstrokes, subtle textures and simple forms. Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns and colours create a visual composite of energy and calm, taking the viewer away from the reality of the image. A low horizon line or the playful placement of simple figures bring context to the expressive composition of colour and texture, creating the space to take the viewer back to their own personal moment in time. These memories are unique to each of us but at the same time, shared by so many.

The result is often playful, sometimes whimsical, and always memorable. You are invited you to lose yourself in the moment!

Bethany is represented in Canada and the United States. Her work can be found in collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.
