Debra Martin

Bio

Floral paintings that exude atmosphere and energy ... bold bright works of art that have a 3-dimensional quality achieved by sculpting a paint-medium directly onto the canvas surface. These unique paintings, with multiple layers of transparent glazes and dry-brushed opaque strokes, are the work of Canadian artist, Deb Martin.

With a master’s degree in psychology, Debra left the field of health care a number of years ago to become a professional artist.  She grew up watching her mother sketch and paint, enjoying a childhood surrounded by all things artistic. Largely self-taught, Deb has completed courses in Fine Art at Okanagan College, and has attended workshops and classes to continue to hone her talents.

As well as her widely collected floral images, Martin is known for landscapes characterized by dramatic skies and majestic trees, exploring what she calls, “those ethereal moments created by sudden changes in atmosphere.... those moments after a heavy rain when the clouds begin to drift apart.”  Equally charming is her bicycle series: “Bicycles are like people; they become more beautiful age. They are testament to a life fully lived and being lived with continued purpose and promise. The accumulated scratches, dents, and missing parts tell a story of challenges faced, risks taken and triumphs celebrated. Bicycles embrace the relentless march of time and stand defiantly against this relentless march. And just like us, oh the stories they could tell."

Deb Martin’s work can be found in private and corporate collections across Canada, as well as in the United States, England and the Netherlands.  Her work has been featured in the magazine “Absolute Okanagan” 2018/2019.

Debra Martin is currently living and painting in the Okanagan Valley.
