Vilem Zach

Bio

Born in 1946 and raised in Prague, Czech Republic Vilem Zach spent numerous years studying privately under the mentor of art professor Tesinsky. Finding life unrewarding under communist rule he left his homeland and moved to Canada in 1969. Once settled in a new and free atmosphere Vilem explored mediums such as acrylics, oils, pastels, clay, and transformed his childhood dream into a full-time profession. By 1978 Vilem had become established with portraiture, then began sculpting and casting in bronze, a medium for which he is now internationally recognized.

His work consists of candid, detailed portraits of western heritage, including life sized monuments in private and corporate collections including: the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC, Petro Canada, Canadian Pacific Hotels, The Banff Museum, and the Calgary International Airport, the President Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic, Prince Andrews of England, Governor Frank Heating of Oklahoma, and Ralph Lauren.

His work has received prestigious awards including: Calgary Time Capsule Monument 1986; the Olympic Torch Runners Monument to commemorate 16th Winter Olympic Games in Calgary 1987; the Mr. W. C Van Horne Statue 1988; and inducted into the world renowned Calgary Stampede Fine Art Exhibition Hall of Fame in 2010.
